“Open,” Rhys asked, holding out a bar of galaxy chocolate. I changed my focus from the request in front of me to a long-distance shot of the kiosk. A lady stood, a cup of tea in front of her and her purse in her hand, she looked over at me, unsure of how to react to the theft she had just witnessed.
“It's ok” I shouted, taking the chocolate from Rhys' hand, and handing it back to the lady, “sorry about that”.
Taking Rhys' hand I bent down to his level, “Do you want chocolate?” I asked, knowing the answer, but following the method of engagement and verbal communication. “Yes” came the reply.
I pulled my purse from my bag and found a two-pound coin. Placing the money in Rhys' hand, I told him to go to the counter and ask for chocolate, “Give money to lady” I said pointing and with the simple language I always used to communicate. Then I waited, just two steps behind him, waiting to see how he would execute the instruction.
Watching Rhys walk in the right direction, I diverted my eyes for two seconds to return my purse to my bag, zipping it closed I returned my glance.
Rhys stood by a man who was well over six foot. The man looked confused, Rhys staring up at him holding his hand, waiting. “Chocolate” came Rhys' words.
I ran over shouting “Sorry” but the man smiled. “We are all friends here,” he said handing me back the coin. It was an ALN session at the gymnasium and he was right, we all knew this world, and we all watched out for each other. That's why the lady who had witnessed a robbery earlier had not flinched, just looked to check that Rhys was ok.
I took the £2 and lead Rhys by the hand to the counter. “Rhys, I want” I prompted. “I want chocolate please,” said Rhys, so quickly with the words all flowing into one. A galaxy bar was handed over along with the change, but Rhys didn't want the money, it meant nothing to him, and the sweet treat was his goal.
In our world, things take time, and lessons are planned to the minute detail, or in this case, they are created on the fly. I didn't reprimand Rhys for taking something he wasn't allowed, because he doesn't understand, but I did follow through with showing how we get chocolate “legally”.
That's how we do it in our world.
We do it differently.
